What is a Lay Servant and why do we need them?
Lay Servants are to serve the local Church or Charge in any way that their witness or leadership and service inspires the laity to deeper commitment to Christ and more effective discipleship. This includes the interpretation of scriptures, doctrine, organization, and ministries of the church.
Basic Course
Prerequisite: Recommendation of your Pastor (the church where your membership is)
The Purchase District is offering a 2-day Basic Lay Servant course on Friday, August 16 and Saturday, August 17, 2019. The course will run from 6:30-9:00 p.m. on Friday evening and from 8:00am-4:00pm on Saturday. This course is for those who either have never completed the Basic Lay Servant training or don’t remember if or when they completed it, and those who are interested in becoming a Lay Servant in their Church or Charge. In the Basic Course topics such as servant and spiritual leadership, caring ministries, basic communication skills, sharing your faith and leading meetings will enhance your knowledge and skill as a leader. This course is not designed to prepare you to preach. Those who have gifts for preaching may take the advanced course on preaching after this course.

This course focuses on the ministry of the lay servant who either regularly or occasionally leads a group or congregation in worship.

Transforming Evangelism: The Wesleyan Way of Sharing Faith
Prerequisite: Basic Lay Servant Course
This course leads participants to learn from John Wesley how to practice relational evangelism. They will discover that evangelism involves not only sharing our faith with others but also welcoming people into a community where they can grow in faith.
Dinner, a light breakfast, and lunch will be served. Please let us know if you have special dietary needs!
